Private Ranch Waters
Surrounded by Colorados beautiful Gunnison National Forest and West Elk Wilderness,…with several managed trout ponds and nearly three miles of private river, Smith Fork Ranch offers first rate fly fishing in a breathtaking mountain setting. You can meet your private guide in Trout Central (our well stocked fly shop) after breakfast, fish all morning, enjoy a streamside picnic, fish all afternoon, and still not see another soul all day long without leaving the ranch property. While you are fishing with us, see if you can accomplish the SFR "Grand Slam" which is catching all four species of trout during your visit to the ranch.

Back Country Fishing
SFR is surrounded by the least traveled, most pristine area of Colorado, and fishing pressure in our vast back country is almost nonexistent. The numerous ponds and streams that dot the high country landscape are home to wild populations of cutthroats, brookies, browns and rainbows. Leave the ranch with your guide and a boxed lunch early in the morning, on foot or on horseback, and spend the day fishing in a pristine mountain valley where your companions will likely be the only other fishermen you see.
While you fish keep a watchful eye out for wildlife,….eagles may be fishing the same waters you are.
Big River Fishing
Just minutes away is the gold medal waters of the famous Gunnison River, an anglers paradise. In addition the Roaring Fork, Crystal, Frying Pan, Taylor and Lake Fork rivers provide many diverse fishing opportunities. You will definitely be in for a treat when fishing any of these rivers as they are Colorado’s best.
We will make arrangements for a guided float or walk/wade trip on any of the above rivers. Please call us as far in advance as possible in order to ensure a reservation.
Seasonal Hatches
The legendary Salmon Fly Hatch on the Gunnison River – mid June to mid July – is truly the pinnacle of dry fly fishing in America.
You won’t believe your eyes when you present dry flies the size of silver dollars to monster trout lurking beneath the surface, waiting to lunge and gobble their favorite morsel. The air above the water will be filled with hatching Salmon flies, with big fish jumping all around.
