Mountain Biking

Welcome to fat-tire heaven. At Smith Fork Ranch, you can enjoy a leisurely roll through the ranch property and Gunnison National Forest … or hit one of our technical single-track trails for an adrenalin-pumping, thrill-a-minute ride. Our staff is always ready with suggestions on where to go for your two-wheel adventure in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and we’ve got all the gear you need to get started.

Bike to Needle Rock & Hike

For those who prefer a relaxed family biking & hiking experience, this activity is for you. At a pace the whole family can be comfortable with; you’ll start from the ranch and venture about 2.5 miles down our scenic dirt road where you reach the trailhead of Needle Rock Natural Area. Needle Rock is the remnant of a volcanic plug that pushed up through the crust, and due to the relative hardness of the basalt of which it is made, has eroded significantly slower than the surrounding mancos shale and sandstone that makes up many of the rocks in the area.At an elevation of 7,797 feet (2,377 m), the towering rock spire stands 800 feet (240 m) tall above the floor of the Smith Fork of the Gunnison River valley. Once at the trailhead, you’ll park your bikes and head up the Needle Rock Trail that is a 0.8 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail that offers scenic views of Crawford and the best viewpoint of the Grand Mesa (the largest flattop mountain in the WORLD). Your mountain bike guide will ensure that everyone in your group is properly equipped for your two-three hour long excursion (including plenty of our Natural Saddle Mountain Spring Water).

Great Trails

Head for the hills! Virginia Creek Trail offers complete access to National Forest land and miles of wide biking trails, perfect for the intermediate rider. Looking for something more intense? We recommend a biking in the mountains challenge on the Bear Track Trail which takes you part way up Saddle Mountain. A soothing spa treatment after this ride is recommended!

Our Bikes

Hop on to one of our Specialized Rockhopper Mountain Bikes, designed for efficiency and comfort on varied terrain, with sizes ranging from small to large. We also offer child-sized bikes for riding on the dirt road and around the compound. Get ‘em started early – pretty soon your kids will be joining you out on the trails.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are coming from across the country. Do we need to bring out own bikes?

If you want to bring your own bikes, please feel free! If not, we have plenty of Specialized bikes available for all ages and sizes.

Just looking for an exercise, do we have to go with a guide?

Mountain biking is one of our activities that gives you the option of going with or without a guide. If you’re looking to get out and stretch your legs solo, just let us know and we will make sure there is a bike waiting for you at the Round Up so you can hit the road. The guides are also happy to provide a lift in the ranger up to the top of the trails so you can enjoy flying back down.

My kids love biking, what size bikes do you have?

We do have some kid size bikes available but please note we do not have training wheels, as our road and terrain wouldn’t be the most user friendly for those looking to or still learning how to ride.
